What is Domain Rating (DR)?
Domain Rating (DR) is a metric developed by Ahrefs that measures the overall strength of a website's backlink profile on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 100. Higher DR indicates a stronger, more authoritative backlink profile. It's widely used by SEO professionals to evaluate domain authority and link-building potential.
DR Score Ranges
| Score | Rating | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 0–9 | Very Low | New or very few backlinks |
| 10–39 | Low | Growing backlink profile, limited authority |
| 40–69 | Moderate | Established site with decent authority |
| 70–100 | Strong | High-authority site with powerful backlink profile |
How is DR Calculated?
Ahrefs calculates DR by looking at how many unique domains (referring domains) link to a target website and the DR values of those linking domains. The scale is logarithmic — going from DR 29 to 30 is much easier than going from 79 to 80.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this free to use?
Yes. This tool uses the free Ahrefs Domain Rating API and requires no sign-up or API key.
What's the difference between Domain Rating and Domain Authority?
Domain Rating (DR) is an Ahrefs metric based on backlink profile strength. Domain Authority (DA) is a Moz metric. Both measure authority on a 0–100 scale but use different algorithms and data sources.
Why is the scale logarithmic?
A logarithmic scale means it's progressively harder to increase your DR. Moving from 20 to 30 requires far fewer quality backlinks than moving from 70 to 80. This better represents real-world authority distribution.
Can I check any domain?
Yes. Enter any domain name or full URL — we'll extract the domain automatically. Works for any publicly accessible website.
How often is DR data updated?
Ahrefs updates their backlink index and DR scores continuously. The free API reflects the latest available data from Ahrefs.
Does a high DR guarantee good rankings?
No. DR measures backlink profile strength, not search rankings directly. Google uses hundreds of ranking factors. However, sites with high DR tend to rank for more keywords due to their strong backlink authority.
